A solution is applied to the area that exfoliates a thin layer of skin. It dissolves dead cells, removes impurities, and tightens enlarged pores. The regenerated new skin is usually smoother, less wrinkled, and has a radiant complexion. It is possible to reach the deeper layers of the skin by using the chemical solution at different concentrations, thereby stimulating collagen production.

Types of chemical peels

There are different types of peels depending on the abrasive strength of the product and the depth of penetration into the skin. Depending on its depth, a chemical peel may require the prior application of a numbing cream or local anesthesia. The treatment is applied using a brush or gauze and removed by rinsing with water.

Superficial peel

Alpha-hydroxy acid or another mild acid is used to penetrate only the outer layer of the skin for gentle exfoliation. This treatment is used to improve the appearance of discolored skin as well as to refresh the face, neck, chest, or hands. It restores a healthy glow to the skin.

Medium peel

Glycolic acid, sulfuric acid, or a combination of acids called Jessner’s peel is applied to penetrate the intermediate layers to remove damaged cells. This treatment is used to improve age spots, wrinkles and fine lines, freckles, and moderate skin discoloration. It can also be used to smooth rough skin and treat some precancerous skin lesions such as actinic keratosis.

Deep peel

Trichloroacetic acid is applied to deeply penetrate the middle layer of the skin and remove damaged skin cells. This treatment removes moderate lines, age spots, freckles, and shallow scars. Patients will see a dramatic improvement in their skin’s appearance.

Are chemical peels painful?

Generally, the chemical products used may cause stinging sensations but not much pain.

The gentler peels include alpha-hydroxy acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, or fruit acids. They can cause tingling, redness, irritation, and crusting. These effects diminish as the skin begins to regenerate.

Trichloroacetic acid is used for deep peels. It removes wrinkles, superficial spots, and pigmentation issues. Phenol, the strongest of all treatments, removes deep facial lines and wrinkles. These types of treatments sting more than others. There may be redness, swelling, and irritation after treatment. The use of creams and gels will help reduce these effects. Additionally, the doctor may prescribe medication to help relieve symptoms.

What can I expect after a chemical peel?

All peels require certain aftercare.

Superficial and medium peels require 1 to 7 days to heal. The treated skin will initially be red. A lotion or cream should be applied until the skin heals, followed by daily use of sunscreen. Makeup can usually be worn the next day.

Deep peels require 7 to 21 days to heal. An ointment must be applied for the first 14 days. Afterward, a thick moisturizer is used for the following 14 days. Sun exposure should be avoided for three months. Makeup can be worn after 3 to 7 days.

An excellent maintenance treatment

Chemical peels or skin exfoliation are excellent treatments to receive during seasonal changes and when planning other rejuvenating procedures. Make an appointment!

Dr. Elroy Shuker MD, CM, CCMF
PRAXIS Family Health Clinic

A chemical peel is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck, and hands by causing […]

[44

post-12731","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-care-en

What is a chemical peel?
