What is allergy desensitization?
More information about immunotherapy
There are different types of immunotherapy treatments:
- Annual injection: A gradual increase in dosage over 4 to 6 months, followed by monthly doses for 3 to 5 years.
- Pre-seasonal treatment: A series of 4 to 11 injections before a specific allergen season (such as pollen).
- Sublingual: A daily dissolvable tablet taken under the tongue for 3 to 5 years, effective for pollen allergies.
Differences between injection and sublingual
Sublingual immunotherapy carries fewer risks of severe reactions compared to injections but requires a daily, long-term commitment. Both methods offer similar effectiveness rates for certain allergies, such as pollen.
How does it work?
Immunotherapy works by administering an increasing dose of the allergen (either by injection or sublingual tablets) so that the immune system can develop tolerance to the substance. The doses are slowly adjusted until reaching a “maintenance dose,” which is then given over a long period.
Immunotherapy does not completely replace medication in all cases, but it can reduce their use over the long term. It is especially recommended when medication side effects are bothersome or when medications alone are insufficient to control symptoms.
