Adapting to parenthood can be a challenging experience, often marked by feelings of resistance to social expectations and environmental norms. New parents may feel overwhelmed and ashamed to ask for help. Although the perinatal period can proceed without major complications, it involves profound changes and requires a significant capacity for adaptation from parents. This period can therefore be a source of anxiety and may lead to psychological distress.
According to INSPQ, prolonged chronic stress can have negative consequences on the course of pregnancy and the development of the unborn child. As a result, certain mental disorders can not only emerge but also be exacerbated. Indeed, nearly half of postpartum depressions begin during pregnancy. Between 30 and 85% of mothers experience the “baby blues“, although its symptoms are generally short-lived, lasting no more than two weeks. The prevalence of depression during the perinatal period varies between 8 and 14% among mothers, depending on the trimester, and between 8 and 13% among fathers. Regarding anxiety disorders, their prevalence reaches approximately 15% throughout the perinatal period.
Moreover, issues related to fertility, conception, and the desire to have a child can also be accompanied by unpleasant feelings such as anger, envy, or disappointment. These emotions can sometimes make the journey to parenthood even more challenging. It is therefore crucial to recognize and support the needs of mothers and their partners during this phase. At Clinique Praxis, we can help and support you in building your family by offering tailored and compassionate care throughout this process.
