What is social work?
The role of social workers (SW) is to support and restore the social functioning of the individual in order to promote their optimal development in interaction with their environment. To do this, they conduct an assessment, determine an intervention plan, and ensure its implementation.[1]
Social workers have a 3-year university education and are regulated by the Order of Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists of Quebec. We distinguish ourselves by our particular approach which consists of assessing the social functioning of the person. Thus, the proposed interventions take into account the different areas of life and the resources the individual has to cope with difficulties.
When to see a social worker?
We usually come into people’s lives when they are experiencing a situational problem. Whether it is a moment of imbalance or a crisis, social workers help take a step back from the situation. From the very first meeting, we gather information that will allow us to critically assess the issue. This enables us to quickly suggest possible solutions. Often, only a few sessions are needed.
Because a problem can sometimes be complex, it is important to be well supported. Our work also involves referring you to other professionals or organizations if necessary. We also play a facilitator role with the different parties involved.
